Just east of Tulamben is Amed,a quait spot with just enough tourist amenities and enjoyable few tourist. There are two main sites here: a shipwreck at Lipah fishing village to the south,and farther south again,the drift dive at Gili Selang, Bali is eastern most point. Amed was traditionally dependent on salt panning and fishing, and despite the advent of tourism,it a place where people stay for weeks at a time.
Amed is located on the northeast coast of Bali, about 2.5 hours drive from Nusa Dua or Kuta. If you stay overnight at Tulamben it will take approximately 20 minutes to drive here. From a landscape point of view, Amed is much prettier than Tulamben. You will see many rice fields along the way, traditional salt-panning and also sandy beaches as opposed to Tulamben's stony beaches. The reef at Amed was discovered as a dive site in 1984. In April and May 1998, it was badly affected by coral bleaching as a sesult of EL Nino down to a depth of 12 metres. The upper reef is slowly recovering, but it is uncertain when it will return to its original splendour. the deeper reef fared better with the gorgonians and coral untouched.
Location
A small village in a peaceful bay, on the North East coast of Bali. How to reach there? It takes about 2 hours by Car, and then a few minutes by local boat. Approximately 20 minutes by Car from Tulamben.
High lights
Used to have some of the best coral in Bali , but in the last few years has suffered a lot of damage. However there is still a great day diving to be if you know where to look for.
Conditions
Generally good and calm, with warm waters. Good visibility is the norm, except after heavy rains in the rainy season (January to March).
